Globe with continents and branches
Black and grey · Flash
A solid black silhouette of a globe, with the continents cut out in white and visible as recognisable landmasses. Thin branches and roots spread out from the base of the globe and curve around its lower edge. The image is in black ink only, centred on a plain white background with no body or skin visible.

Dear Wenna, the Sea Office sent the new globe up on Tuesday, carried by two porters who swore at every stair. Master Oloff says it is the last one cut in the old workshop at Carrow, before the river flooded the lower rooms and the copper plates went green. He had me scrape the ink from the seams with a goose quill, and I found the continents had been punched out with a hot iron, so the light comes through them. Hold it to a window and Ardance and the Lesser Isles glow like coins.

It is the roots that trouble me. Every plate in the drawer has a root-line somewhere, a hairfine thread of ink that starts at the edge of the paper and wanders toward the middle, and no surveyor will admit to drawing them. Master Oloff says the workshop tree was planted the year the first chart was made, and that it grows wherever the charts are kept dry. I laughed, until I saw the thread on the globe had moved overnight, curling another finger's width toward the kingdom of Vell, which has not existed since the old Queen signed her name in the wrong margin.
So I have started a small ledger of my own. Each morning I record where the branches have gone, and I put a pinch of salt on the wood where they reach the edge of a sea. Yesterday the roots went under the Tarran Sound and came up in your garden, I am almost certain of it. Write and tell me if the rhubarb has changed colour. Yours in ink, Edmund
