Geometric world map line design
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A black linework drawing of a world map made from angular, faceted polygons, with the continents outlined as connected triangles and quadrilaterals. The lines are thin and even, with no shading, and the design is shown in isolation on a plain white background. The composition is wide and centred, with the Americas on the left, Europe and Africa in the centre and Australia at the lower right.

Rain had been coming down on the market since six, sliding off the tarpaulins in ropes, and Mr Okonedo's stall was the only one still lit. He sold the cheap things: tide tables, bus maps, a box of postcards nobody wanted. But at the back, under a sheet of clear plastic, he kept the drawings he would not sell. Every one was of the world, and every one was made of straight lines that met at sharp corners, as though the land had been folded from paper and never smoothed.

"Nobody buys the broken ones," he said, when I asked why he kept them hidden. He slid one towards me. The Americas hung down the left side like two kites tied end to end, and Europe was a cluster of shards with a wedge of Africa pressing its chin into them. "Coastlines are a lie anyway. A curve is just a triangle that hasn't made up its mind."
I bought the one of Australia, the small lopsided diamond at the bottom, for four pounds and a flask of sweet tea. That night I laid it on my kitchen table with a ruler and found the lines did not quite agree. The Pacific edge was out by a hair, and where the two halves should have met there sat a gap like a dropped stitch.
Next morning I went back. The stall was gone, only a rectangle of wet tarmac and a ring of grit where the pole had stood. Tucked under a drain grate I found a scrap he must have dropped, a single triangle inked in the same thin black, with one line in pencil: close the gap yourself. I knelt on the kerb and traced the missing edge with my wet finger, and the rain ran into the seam and made it look, for a moment, like a coast.
