Hatched ocean waves in a circle
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
The design shows a rough sea of rolling waves with crests breaking near the horizon, filling the lower half of a bold black circle. The waves are built from dense, fine hatched and cross-hatched lines that create shading and texture, with the upper half left as plain white space. The image is monochrome, on a plain white background, and centred within the frame.

You are the only one who hasn't gone to bed when the snow closes the coast road. The inn at Scarth Head has eleven rooms, one fire that smokes whenever the wind swings north, and a round window over the stair that old Mrs Quayle calls the porthole, because it was cut from a wreck's saloon door in her grandfather's time. Tonight it shows nothing but white. The lamp finds the glass, your own reflection, and beyond that the dark that used to be the sea.

Mrs Quayle comes down in her late husband's coat and sits across from you with a pot of tea gone cold. She says the sea never stops for weather, it only changes its manners. Tom drew, badly, on the backs of rent receipts. He sketched the waves he had sailed under for forty years, rolling in close hatched lines, crests breaking where the water met the sky. He said you could hear them if you drew them slowly enough.
At midnight you take the ladder to the loft and find the trunk. Inside, wrapped in oilcloth, are twenty sheets of the same circle, each one more crowded with lines than the last, the top of every page left empty. Under the final one Tom had written, in pencil that has nearly rubbed away: Keep the top bare. The sky is for whoever's still coming in.
By morning the plough has cleared the road, and a van idles at the gate with its wipers going. You leave the fire banked and the porthole wiped clean. Outside, the drifts stand piled against the wall in rows, crest after crest, all the way down to the harbour wall.
