Goat head on the back of a hand

Traditional · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A large goat head with curled horns covers the back of a hand, with the horns extending onto the fingers. The bold black outlines and heavy solid black shading around the head create a flame-like edge that runs up the wrist and forearm. The main design is rendered in black and grey with tan skin tones, while a partly visible band tattoo at the bottom left of the frame shows some colour.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The goat has already walked past the barrier when you look up from the stamp. It doesn't hurry. Its horns curl back like two rusted hooks, and the cardboard tag on its collar reads ACROSS in somebody's careful capitals, which is the only paperwork either of you has.

The crossing at Vell Pass closed at dusk eleven years ago, when the bridge washed out, but nobody told the brazier in the hut to stop burning. You keep it fed with pine off the old fence. Tonight the flames climb the stone chimney and throw orange across the customs ledger, and the goat stands in the light as if it owns the valley, its beard singed at the tips.

The man who brought it waits on the far side of the gully with his hands in his pockets. Ferris, he calls himself, though you have seen his name written three different ways in the ledger. He wants a stamp for the animal, a line saying it arrived from the south with no goods to declare. You tell him goats have never appeared on the form. He tells you that is exactly the point.

You stamp it anyway. Then you watch the creature step off the edge of the path and down into the black gorge where the firelight gives out, and you understand the horns were never what marked it. It knows the way over. Ferris has already turned for home, and you sit with the ink drying on your palm, the red word PASSED on the page, and nothing at all to declare.
