Wolf head on the back of a hand

Realism · Hand · Mixed · Photo

A large wolf head faces forward across the back of the hand, with the snout and ears reaching towards the knuckles. Soft grey and black shading builds the fur and face, while the eyes are rendered in green and pale blue for contrast. Coloured red and green wash appears on the wrist and forearm above, and a small red heart sits on one finger.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wolf came down off the ridge the week the frost cracked the mill wheel, and it stood at the edge of the bean field with one eye green as bottle glass and the other pale as river ice. The men of Hallow Mere took their lanterns and their fowling pieces to the field, but the wolf only turned its grey head and looked at them until they went home again.

Old Tobiah Crane said wolves kept their own counsel, and that was the trouble with them. Ysolde Brand, who ground the miller's corn and had no patience for old men's fears, carried a heel of bread to the stone wall each morning and set it down. Each morning the bread was gone, and in its place lay a hazel twig stripped white, or a jay's blue feather, or once a button of polished horn that Ysolde did not recognise and kept anyway.

On the night of the new moon the men came back. They found the wolf sitting by the mill door with its back to them, facing the lane, and they nearly fired before they saw what it watched. Along the lane came Reuben Pell, the bailiff, who had been taking grain from the widows' sacks since midsummer and calling it tithe. The wolf rose without a sound and stepped into the hedge. Pell stopped, turned, and ran all the way to the county road, and nobody in Hallow Mere ever saw him again.

By spring the wolf had gone back to the ridge. The bread still went out each morning, and the stone wall stayed clean, and on the first warm day Ysolde found a single rowan berry set on the top of it, red as a small heart, which she left there until the birds took it.
