Goddess with skulls on a thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A fierce female figure wearing an ornate jewelled crown stares out with blue eyes and sticks out her tongue, framed by wavy grey hair and gold drop earrings. Two skulls sit at the base of the design beside a strand of beads. The bold black outlines are paired with grey shading on the hair and skin, and with red, gold and blue colour on the crown, gems and eyes, centred on the thigh.

Dear Ruth,

It is ten to four and the proving cupboard is humming like it has opinions. Mr Okafor has gone home to sleep, leaving me the keys, the flour ledger and that painted tin of goddess above the oven, the one Mum bought from the stall by the bus station for two pounds and a bag of brown sugar. You remember how she used to say the woman on it was the one who would not be fed, and how she'd stick her own tongue out at her every time she walked past. I have started doing the same. It makes the lads on the early delivery laugh, and it keeps the nerves off.
The Saturday cobs are shaped and waiting on the boards, twelve rows of them, each one scored in a neat crown. Mr Okafor says they look like dead men's fingers when they come out golden, but he has never once refused a second helping. Last week a man in a good coat tried to pay with a bent coin and a long story about his sister's wedding. I gave him his change in the shape of a stare, the way the goddess does on the tin, and he left without the loaf. I was sorry for about a minute. Then I was not.
The light is coming up grey over the car park now, and the first van is turning in at the corner with its headlamps still on. I have set the trays in the window with the good crusts facing out. The tin is watching the queue from above the oven, crown glinting in the lamp, tongue out, ready for whoever comes next. Come on Sunday. Bring your big laugh and the proper flour from Leeds, and we will argue about the rye.
Love, Pearl
