Gold and silver chevron tattoo on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A stacked pair of chevron arrows points upwards on the forearm, drawn as outlined shapes with a hatched, textured finish. The chevrons alternate between gold and silver foil tones against the skin, with a clean, symmetrical layout. The background is a plain pale wall, and the shot is cropped to show the arm and part of the shoulder.

The gold went on last, which is the wrong way round, Mab, and I told Mr Pettit so, but he paid in advance and wanted the arrows done before the autumn fair. You'll remember the chevron board over the forge door, the one with the old green paint showing through. I have been at it all week with the size and the gilder's tip, laying leaf the width of a fingernail at a time.

Silver I did first on the upper pair, because silver tarnishes if you let it sit and he wanted them to catch the light off the lane. Gold on the lower two, pointing down the hill toward the mill. He says they should point at the church instead, and I said arrows point wherever the wind is going, and he laughed, so I took that as settled. For the hatching I dragged the tip across the wet size in short strokes so the leaf would crack and show the red bole underneath, and it looks like frost on a ploughed field.
Last night the lamp burned out and I walked up to the edge of the birch wood to clear my head. Someone has nailed small arrows to the trunks, all pointing up, each one fresh cut and still pale at the heart. The children who go in after blackberries must be following them home. I didn't ask who did it. I stood there with the size still sticky on my fingers and thought of you out on that water, looking for the same kind of mark against the sky.
Come home when the leaf runs out, or write and tell me which way the wind is blowing. I will keep the silver polished until you do. Your loving sister, Ada.
