Gold and silver metallic temporary tattoos on a forearm, with a patterned band and a dotted vine, worn beside turquoise beaded bracelets.

Gold metallic temporary tattoos on forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A close crop of a forearm showing two metallic foil temporary tattoos: a wide band of interlocking leaf or scale shapes and a slim vine with round dots. The designs have a shimmering gold and silver finish with textured foil, and the warm skin tone contrasts with the metallic ink. Turquoise beaded bracelets sit on the wrist, and a layered necklace and denim jacket are visible at the top of the frame.

Dear Nell,

The peach tree finally gave up its last fruit this week, and the greenhouse glass is cracked where the hail came through in June, so you will have to come home for the clearing whether you like it or not. I found the tin under the potting bench yesterday. It still holds the foil transfers Dad bought from the stall at Ludlow fete, the ones the man swore would last a fortnight in the rain and which lasted Dad a whole decade. The leaf band is still there, gold and silver scales overlapping like the roof of a shed, and beside it the thin vine with its little round dots.

You remember how he wore them every August for the village show, claiming the marrows judged better in gold. Nobody believed him, but Mrs Pryce always asked to see the band again, and he always obliged. After the funeral I could not bring myself to throw the tin away, so I have been using the vine sheet for something else. I pressed it face down into the bed along the wall, dots first, then gave it a good soak with the can. The foil is nothing but a carrier for the seed, so the dots had to be sown by hand, one bean to a dot.

Three weeks on, something has come up through every second dot, pale and stubborn, and it is already reaching for the gold leaves as if it had been told where to go. The band I have left on the shed nail, where the afternoon light catches its lattice and throws little fish-scale shadows across the workbench. I keep meaning to take it down and put it somewhere safe, but it seems to belong out there now.

Bring your secateurs and a decent pair of boots. The beans will need tying on by the weekend, and I am not doing it alone.

Ruth
