The gold ran out on Thursday and the silver on Saturday, so I have been finishing the week on the bronze foil, which the Vickery girls say looks like pennies. Forty pounds a week the council takes for the pitch on the harbour wall, and this summer the only thing that has come in faster than the tide is sunburn. Still, the crescents sell. Everybody wants a moon on the inside of the wrist, and I have learned to cut the teardrops so the points sit over the pulse.

Mr Abara from the chandlery came by at six with his daughter's bangles stacked to her elbow, asking for a leaf spray that wouldn't wash off in the sea. I told him nothing wouldn't wash off in the sea, but the transfers last a week if you keep them dry, and he bought three sheets anyway. He said the dotted lines looked like the notches on his father's tide tables. I have thought about that all evening.

Then, at closing, I found a sheet in my box that I never printed. A lattice cut so fine it looked like frost on a window, and under it a slip of paper in a hand I didn't know: Keep one for the boat. Ray swears it isn't his. I have put the slip in the tin with your letters. Tomorrow I'll press the lattice onto the back of my own hand, where the bangles don't reach, and see what the tide brings in.
