Metallic gold and silver temporary tattoos on arms
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
Several bare forearms and wrists lie side by side on a blue patterned cloth, each decorated with metallic gold and silver temporary tattoos. The designs include leaf sprigs, a feather, an eye motif, teardrop shapes, dotted lines and geometric panels, all drawn in fine outline and solid metallic fill. Stacked gold bangles and cuffs sit alongside the designs, and the soft even lighting gives the composition a flat, overhead feel.

Dear Marguerite, I found the box you left in the back of the van, the one with the seven gold bangles still rattling inside it like a bag of loose change. I have not worn them. I have been sitting on the tailgate at the lay-by near Hexham for two hours, trying to decide whether to post it or drive it to you myself, and the sun has gone behind the hedge and left my arms cold.

You always said the metallic transfers were a cheat, that a real mark had to hurt to earn its place. So I did the thing you would hate. I peeled one of the silver leaf sprigs off its backing and pressed it onto my wrist, right where the old burn scar from the caravan stove sits, and I rubbed it with a coin until it held. It is still there. The eye is on my other forearm, the one with the teardrops running down it like a stopped clock's ticks, and every time I catch it in the wing mirror I think of the reunion, of Mrs Ashdown holding up our Year Ten photograph and saying nobody here changed a bit.
We did change. You cut your hair in the bus shelter and never told anyone why. I took the feather off the card and kept it in my glovebox for three years. None of that is on the cards. The little gold dots run in a line I can follow with my thumb, and I have been following them for a while now, all the way from the dry field to the sign for the services.
Come and take them back, or tell me to keep them. Either way I will be on the tailgate at seven, if the midges let me.
