Metallic arrows and Eye of Horus on forearm

Blackwork · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The image shows a close view of a tanned forearm and wrist decorated with several metallic designs. Silver arrows with feathered fletching sit at the upper left, above a solid black band of pointed chevron shapes with small white dots. A gold Eye of Horus outline sits on the hand beside a silver lined band and a gold beaded bracelet, and the designs appear to be temporary metallic transfers.

Her uncle Selim thought the whole trade a sin. He had sold brass lamps for forty years and believed anything that came off in the bath was a lie told in metal. "Ink stays," he said, wiping his hands on a rag. "Ink is a promise. This is a rumour."

The fisherman's son came back on the last Tuesday with the arrows gone. The sea had taken them on the bay, all but one feather that clung in the crease of his palm. He wanted another set and the Eye pressed hard so it would hold. Nadia peeled the sheet, laid the gold over his pulse and rubbed until the shape came up clean and bright.

Uncle Selim watched from the doorway, then went inside and came back with a tin of silver paint and a fine brush. Without a word he drew a chevron band above the foil, black ink along the points and a dot of silver between each one. "Now it stays," he said. The boy laughed, and nobody mentioned the sea again.
