Gold and silver metallic temporary tattoos on arms

Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo

Several forearms and hands lie side by side on a textured blue surface, each decorated with metallic temporary tattoos. The designs include teardrops, lattice panels, dotted lines, a leaf or feather motif and a sunburst-like arc, rendered in flat gold and silver foil. Gold bangles and cuffs sit alongside the designs, and the warm skin tones contrast with the reflective metallic ink.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The foil press at Porthlow had started to sulk in March, so Nell fed the gold sheets through by hand, one lattice panel at a time, while her father argued with a gull over the fish boxes. By noon the stall smelled of warm metal and vinegar chips. Her tin tray was already crowded with teardrops, dotted lines and little feathers, each one stamped onto backing paper and sealed under cling film, ready for wrists that had come down the steps from the car park with their bangles already on.

The trouble began with the spoon. Nell had carved a teardrop stamp from the handle of her grandmother's silver spoon, filed to a point, and it printed so crisply that a girl from Leeds bought six sheets without haggling. Her father saw the sales slip and said nothing, which was worse than shouting. After that he stopped telling her that gold was for shop windows and silver was for mourners, and started timing his coffee breaks to watch her work.

On the last Friday of August the wind turned and the tide came up the slipway faster than anyone expected. Nell packed the press into a crate and carried it up the steps with the tray balanced on her hip, the gold catching the low sun so every passer-by squinted. At the top she sat on the wall and peeled the final sheet, a sunburst arc with a row of silver dots. She pressed it to her inner wrist and rubbed it down with her thumb until the foil took. When she lifted her hand the arc glinted, and below the wall the sea was doing exactly the same thing.
