Gold foil HRH crown tattoo on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A close view of a forearm carrying a gold foil crown above the block letters HRH, with a thin tail to the crown and simple solid shapes. A white card held beside the arm repeats the design, with the wording TO THE ONE AND ONLY Royal HIGHNESS in smaller gold script and capitals. The metallic gold tone dominates against the soft peach skin and pale top, and the arm fills the left of the frame.

The gold leaf had lifted off the crown on the third barrel, so Nell spent the Saturday before the fair kneeling in the cider shed with a pot of size and a brush no thicker than an eyelash. Her grandfather had lettered every cask the same way for forty years: a little crown, then HRH in block capitals, because he insisted the Bramley Hall cider was fit for a royal highness and anyone who doubted it could drink a pint and say so.

Outside, the orchard was heavy and sweet. Windfalls rotted gold in the long grass, and wasps had found the drips from the press. Her cousin Tom came in wiping his hands on his jeans, saying the judges were early and the trestle wasn't laid. "Tell them the king's not down yet," Nell said, not looking up. She laid the leaf over the tail of the crown, pressed it with a cotton pad, and the metal took.
When the judges arrived, a woman in a lilac cardigan tasted from the first cask, then the second, and stopped at the one with the new crown. "Who is HRH?" she asked. Nell pointed through the open door at the old Blenheim by the gate, which had dropped its fruit in a ring around its trunk like a coronet. "Him," she said. "Only one in the orchard who's never once been late."
The woman laughed and wrote something on her card. The cider took the rosette. Nell wiped the brush and left the gold on the cask, where it caught the afternoon light and held it a little longer than it needed to.
