Lettering tattoo on the inner wrist and forearm reading I'm with Megan's bachelorette party, with two pink martini glasses beside a line about buying a drink.

Bachelorette party text with martini glasses

Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A hand is raised toward the camera against a plain light background, showing a tattoo on the inner wrist. The design is typeset text in black serif capitals, with the name in larger pink letters, next to a line drawing of two martini glasses with pink fill. The image is evenly lit and sharply focused, with the design shown clearly in the centre of the frame.

The last train to Harrogate had gone, and Megan's party had gone with it, all eleven of them crammed into the guard's van with the fizz still in their hair. Priya stood under the departures board holding a paper cup of cold tea and a phone at four per cent. Somebody had written MEGAN'S on the back of her hand in pink biro, and it had smudged into a sort of bruise. The board said the next service was at 06:12, which meant five hours of Platform 4, a vending machine that only took coins from 1994, and a man in a hi-vis jacket who kept walking past as if she might be a lost suitcase.

She tried the phone first. Megan's sister answered on the fourth ring and said the hen party had got a taxi to Leeds, and was that Priya, and had she seen the little pink card? Priya had not. She dug in her coat pocket and found it, crumpled, the one with the typeset words that had made the whole hen weekend feel like a joke worth wearing: I'M WITH MEGAN'S BACHELORETTE PARTY. Underneath, in tiny capitals, IF I'M LOST, PLEASE BUY ME A DRINK.

The man in hi-vis stopped beside her. He read her wrist, then the card, then her face, and sighed like someone who had been asked this exact question a hundred times that week. He sat down on the bench, pulled a flask from his jacket, and poured something into the cup lid. It smelt of pear drops and disappointment.

"Cheers," Priya said, and drank it anyway.

At 06:12 the first train of the day pulled in with its doors already open, and the man stood, nodded at the card in her hand, and said, "Leeds, is it? Get on, then. Megan's paying."
