Metallic GIVE GRACE lettering on a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A hand is raised against a plain white background, with the words GIVE GRACE set in spaced block capitals across the inner wrist. The lettering appears to be a metallic foil temporary tattoo rather than ink, with crisp, even letterforms and no visible shading. Matching cards with the same wording are scattered around the hand, giving the composition a flat-lay look in soft, bright light.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Ruth had set the same two words so many times that her fingers knew them before her eyes did. GIVE GRACE, cut into a grid of little squares, nine letters spread over three lines, spaced so wide they looked like someone breathing carefully. The order had come in on a Tuesday from a woman who wanted them for a wedding, or possibly a funeral, she couldn't decide. She paid in cash and asked for gold.

Ruth's shop sat at the end of Crane Street, above a bakery that smelled of burnt sugar every morning. Downstairs the foil press ticked as it cooled. Upstairs she kept a drawer of lead type that nobody had asked for in thirty years, and a window that looked down on the canal, where the narrowboats came through as slow as a held breath.
The woman came back on Friday. She didn't want the cards yet. She wanted to know whether the letters could be made a little smaller, then larger, then smaller again, and whether the gold could look as if it had been waiting a long time to be noticed. Ruth said she could try. She did not say that she had once printed the same phrase for her father's headstone, in capitals a mason would have approved of, and that he had never once given anyone grace in his life, and that she had printed it anyway because the stone needed something.
The woman pressed a foil strip to the inside of her wrist, rubbed it with a damp thumb, and peeled it away. The letters came up bright and even, as if they had always belonged there. "Keep the rest," she said, and tucked the spare cards into her coat. Ruth watched her go past the bakery window and down towards the water, the gold catching the light on her arm each time she raised her hand.
