Gold foil pair of wings
Colour · Flash
The image shows a symmetrical pair of stylised wings, one on each side, with curved feather lines that taper towards the centre. The wings are rendered in a metallic gold foil texture with solid shapes and no shading. They sit centred on a plain white background with generous empty space around them.

The council wanted the wings done before the hoarding went up, so I was on the roof of Hollin Tower at six in the morning with a flat brush, a tin of gold size and a roll of leaf I was frightened of breathing on. Nobody had touched the wings since 1962. They sat either side of the entrance canopy like they'd been folded and forgotten, grey with pigeon muck, the gilt gone brown in the seams.

Half the feathers on the left had lifted clean off the concrete, so I worked from the right. You can't guess a mirror. I took a tracing from the one good wing, pricked the outline with a darning needle, and dusted chalk through the holes onto the new side, the way my father taught me on pub signs. Every feather tapered toward the middle, like a hand closing. By nine the wind had come up off the river and the leaf kept lifting at the edges, so I laid each sheet with my palm flat and breathed out slow.
A girl was on a ninth-floor balcony opposite, a carton of Ribena in one hand, watching me work. When I finished she shouted across the gap and asked whether the wings were for flying. I said they were for showing off. She said that was a daft reason to make wings, and went back inside.
At noon the sun came round the west side and the whole block lit up along the gold, every feather catching at once. The girl came back out and held up her phone, and I stood on the scaffold with size on my cuffs and let her take it, because for about a minute the wings looked as if they might actually lift the thing off its footings and carry it somewhere nicer.
