Gold leaf vine running down the spine

Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo

A woman is seen from behind on a sandy beach, with her hair pinned up and the sea behind her. A slender vine of pointed leaves in metallic gold runs down the centre of her spine, with a few small gold flecks on her shoulder and upper arm. The design appears to be a temporary metallic piece, and the gold stands out against her tanned skin.

The vine had been climbing the sea wall at Oreo for three summers before anyone asked whose it was. Its leaves were narrow and pointed, and in the evening light they turned the colour of new coins. Men going down to the salt pans touched them for luck and climbed back up with gold dust on their palms, which their wives brushed onto the bread.

Kallia, the potter's youngest, was the one who noticed the vine grew only where she had knelt. The night her father drowned, she had poured the last of his wine on the stones, because the priest said the dead drink through the ground. Nobody told her the wine would take root. After that she carried a bucket of sea water down the steps each dusk, and the vine put out one more leaf for every bucket, and the leaves came away in her hands as coins.

The harbour master wanted the vine for the temple of the sea mother. He sent two boys with a rope to cut it at the root. They pulled, the wall groaned, and a leaf snapped loose and fell into the surf, sinking before anyone could reach it. Kallia walked into the water after it and did not come out. The next morning the vine ran down the sea wall again, thinner than before, and it had grown over the rope the boys had left behind.

The salt men still touch the leaves on their way down to the pans. They drop a little silver into the bucket by the steps, and they do not ask who waters it. The bucket is never empty, though nobody has filled it in living memory.
