Three stacked chevrons on the back of the neck
Fine line · Neck · Colour · Photo
The photograph shows the back of a woman's neck, with her hair tied up and loose strands falling forward. Three thin, stacked chevron lines sit at the centre of the nape, drawn in fine, slightly broken linework. The ink appears light gold or metallic against warm skin, and the close crop keeps the tattoo as the clear focus against a black strap and soft natural light.

In the old port of Hallowmere, the lamplighters went out at dusk with a pot of gold paint and a brush made from a goose feather. They marked the cobbles where the lamps had gone dark, three chevrons stacked one above another, each pointing the way home for anyone who had lost their bearings in the fog off the river.

Tomas, a boy who had carried the paint pot since spring, asked his master why three and not one. The old man said one chevron points, two make a road, and three tell a body the road is true. So Tomas painted three each night down Fishgate, past the salt warehouses, and up the wet steps of St Oda's, where the bells had stopped ringing before he was born.
One November night a woman came up out of the water with no coat and no name she could remember. She followed the gold marks in a crooked line until she reached the steps, and there she found the chevrons turned round, pointing back down toward the river. Tomas had not painted them that way. He had not painted them at all that night, because his master had sent him home with a cough. She stood a long while, then turned and followed the marks back down to the quay, where a boatman held up a lantern and did not ask her anything. By morning the gold had worn from the stones, but the lamp at the harbour mouth was still burning.
