Fine line gold chevron tattoo with small text inside the lines, placed on the back of a woman's neck below her hairline.

Fine line chevrons on the back of the neck

Fine line · Neck · Colour · Photo

A woman with long, loose hair is photographed from behind, showing a tattoo of three stacked chevron lines on the back of her neck. The linework is very fine and the chevrons contain tiny lines of text that are too small to read. The ink appears metallic gold against the skin, and a dark bikini strap crosses the lower part of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The gold paint came in a tin no bigger than a snuff box, and Mr Tulley kept it locked in the cupboard under the stage with the spare fuses. He let me use it once a month, when the floor had been waxed and the arrows needed touching up. Single chevrons for the foxtrot, three stacked for the quickstep, so the dancers knew which way to turn before the band did.

I started writing inside them that spring. Nothing you could read from the balcony, just a few words the width of a grain of rice: the time of the last tram, a name, the word Sunday. I told myself it was for nobody. Mostly it was for the girl who swept the cloakroom, who never looked up from her broom when I passed and who must have noticed the floor was the only place anyone ever wrote her anything.

Ruth found the first one in April, down on her knees with a duster, tracing the gold with her thumbnail. She said nothing to me. She just began dancing the quickstep along the line where the chevrons pointed toward the back door, and by June the whole hall smelled of her cheap rose water and the boards creaked under two pairs of shoes that were always, somehow, in step.

When the floor was resanded in October, the old gold came up with the dust. Mr Tulley never asked what any of it said. On the Friday before the wedding he came to find me with a fresh tin in his hand and one more chevron to paint, pointing at the door I would be leaving through, and he left the space beneath it blank for me to fill.
