Small fine line tattoos on a upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman with long blonde hair stands on a beach with her back to the camera, holding a dark felt hat. Two small black line-drawn tattoos sit on her upper back, one to the left of the spine and one lower down near the centre. The soft, pale background and open composition keep the focus on the tattoos and bare skin.

The anchor had been in the sand for eleven weeks before anyone thought to ask whose it was. Nell found the flukes first, poking out of the shingle below the lifeboat house, furred with weed and the colour of wet slate. She went up the slipway for the barrow and came back wearing her brother's gloves, because the iron was cold even in June.

Her father would not look at it. He sat on an upturned crate by the net loft, mending a shackle that did not need mending, and said the Good Intent had carried that anchor for thirty-one years and had never once asked it to be lost. Nell asked what he wanted done with it. He said to leave it where the tide had put it.

So she didn't. She rolled it past the wrack line, scraped the crust off the shank with a bread knife, and found a small crowned letter stamped there, one nobody in Porthmellow had seen since the chapel burned. By evening the whole harbour knew, and by morning three men were at her gate arguing over the chain.

In the end it was old Amos who settled it. He ran a thumb along the ring and said the anchor had come home on its own, which was more than most men managed. Nell took the small iron ring for herself and left the rest where it lay, sunk in the sand at the head of the slip, so the tide would have to work around it.
