The swallows came back to the harbour town of Keld on the first warm morning, and Mirren, who kept the salt store, saw that one of them carried a thread of gold in its beak. Her brother Tam had gone east with the fishing boats three summers before and not come back. Her mother said the sea had kept him. Mirren said nothing, but each dawn she set out bread on the windowsill for the birds.

The swallow with the gold thread dropped it at her feet. It was not thread but a feather, long and bright as a hammered coin, with the quill split at the tip. Her grandmother used to say that a swallow carries only what it has been given, so someone far off must have given this one away. Mirren took the feather up the hill to the fletcher, who had made arrows for the lord's hunts for forty years.

The fletcher turned it over in his fingers and laughed softly. "This is not from the sea. Feathers like this grow on the birds that nest in the cliffs beyond the salt marsh, where the old road ends." He cut three arrows from ash, fletched them with the gold feather, and told her that an arrow shot straight up falls where the wind decides. At dusk Mirren carried the arrows down to the shore and loosed them one after another, north, south and out over the water.

Two days later the swallows came in low over the wall, and a boat rowed into the harbour with a thin man in its stern. His hands were full of arrows with gold feathers he had taken from a wrecked ship. Before he said a word to his mother, Tam asked whether the bread was still on the sill.
