Gold metallic leaf vine on chest
Botanical · Chest · Colour · Photo
A close crop of a torso showing a vertical vine of gold metallic leaves running from the upper chest down towards the stomach, with a thin stem through the centre. The foil design is flat and uniform, with no shading, and sits against warm skin. The pink lace bralette, blue denim jeans and black belt with a gold buckle frame the design, and the subject's face is outside the frame.

The gilt leaves came off the sheet one at a time, and you laid each on the logbook's blotter before the damp off the Cauld Sound could curl it. Mrs Ferrier had sent them out with the fortnightly stores, a dozen strips of foil glued to a backing card, and a note saying only that the vine on the west wall would want something to show for the winter. The real vine had been stripped to its stem by the February gales. Its bare line ran from the gutter down to the rock, a thin green cord you had been meaning to tie back since October.

You pressed the leaves along a length of cord and carried it up the hundred and twelve steps to the lamp room, where Ruth Abernethy was already polishing the lenses with a chamois and a grudge. 'Stick it where the salt can't get at it,' she said. So you climbed the outside ladder with a pot of glue and a thumb full of gold, and set the strip against the stone, leaf by leaf, from the gutter down to the sill.
That night the fog came in thick as wool. The beam swept and returned, swept and returned, and somewhere past the Carrick Stone a fishing coble with two brothers aboard saw a flash of gold where there should have been only grey. Ruth said it was the brass. You knew better. You had watched the leaves take the light all evening, each one turning in turn like a row of small lamps, and you had thought of the vine doing what it could with the little it had left.
In the morning the boat came in under the rock, and the younger brother climbed the ladder to ask who had gilded the wall. You told him the vine had decided to come back.
