Gold metallic temporary tattoos on forearms
Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A close crop of a person's forearms and hands, with gold metallic temporary tattoos of stars, chain links, triangles and a diamond shape on the skin. The designs are flat, solid gold with crisp edges, and several gold bracelets and coin charms are worn alongside them. The warm, low-light beach setting and black and gold patterned shorts sit in the soft background.

You have the gold sheets out on the potting bench before the kettle has boiled, pressing the little stencils flat with your thumb so the morning dew cannot lift them. Your nephew Ollie wants stars on his wrists for the fête, and you have promised him the good gold, the kind your mother kept in a tin beside the tea caddy. The stars come off the backing paper in one clean piece, and you lay them across the back of his hand like a row of pins.

Outside the glasshouse the runner beans are climbing the canes in ragged spirals, and the sweet peas have gone to seed in the bed by the wall. Ollie is chattering about the chain his friend Dev has, the fine links that clink when he waves. You tell him chains take patience, that you need to rub the backing with a damp cloth and wait the length of three slow breaths before peeling. He counts them under his breath, and when you lift the film the chain comes away perfect, every link still shining.
The fête is on the green by the church, with bunting strung between the lime trees and a tombola table run by the vicar's wife. Ollie holds his arms up to show the triangles you drew in gold ink along his other forearm, and a girl from next door asks where he got them. He tells her his aunt makes them out of sunlight and the back of an old tin. You do not correct him.
Later, when the stalls are folded and the last of the lemonade is warm in its jug, you find a single coin-shaped sticker stuck to the potting bench, its gold gone dull at the edges. You press it onto your own wrist, just to see, and the late sun catches it.
