Gold metallic chevron and triangle designs on arm and hip
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
Two thin gold chevron lines run across the forearm, with a gold knot band at the wrist and a row of six small gold triangles on the hip above ripped denim shorts. The linework is fine and uniform, rendered in metallic gold ink against tanned skin. The composition is a close crop with a gold watch and stacked bangles, and the sea is blurred in the background.

The tide had already turned when I reached the gatehouse, so I ran the last hundred yards along the wall with the gold pot knocking against my hip and my watch telling me I had less time than I wanted. Below the broken portcullis the sea was slate-grey and rising over the causeway stones, and out in the murk the ferry bell was ringing twice, the signal Mam had taught me meant someone was waiting on the far side.

I painted the chevrons by feel. Two fine lines, pointing up the slope, one above the other, the way my grandfather had shown me on the chapel steps: follow the arrows and the rock stays under your feet. The gold would catch what lamplight there was and throw it back across the wet stone, so a man in a boat could see the path even when the fog came in off the bay. I had done it a hundred times, but never with the wind this strong, and the first line smeared before I finished the second.
Hal Pascoe was at the bottom of the stair with a rope, tying the bowline he always tied, the loop that never slips. 'You're late, girl,' he said, not unkindly, and handed me the free end. Six small gold triangles were still tacky on the lintel above us, the pennants we raised for every crossing that got home. I counted them while he pulled. Five was the old number. Six meant he had gone back out for somebody.
The bell rang again, closer now. Hal leaned into the rope and I leaned into him, and out in the fog a dark bow nosed through the grey and turned toward the arrows we had made. It came in on the gold, the way it always did, and we made the line fast to the iron ring while the water took the causeway behind it.
