Gone to Market sign on top of a foot
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a wooden signpost with the words GONE TO MARKET in capital letters sits on the top of a foot, between the big toe and the second toe. The sign and post are drawn in a simple, slightly wobbly black outline with light shading inside the board. The skin is pale and the plain white background keeps the tattoo as the clear focus.

Dear Alf, The sign is still up on the post at the bottom of Hollins Lane, though nobody in the village will own to painting it. Dad can't spell market, Mum swears she never lifted a brush in her life, and Ruth from the post office reckons it appeared the morning after the summer fair, nailed on at a slant with a wire coat hanger. The lettering is square and a bit wobbly, as if the painter was sorry about it.

The hens have been let out every day since, and I've had to explain the sign to everyone who comes up the lane. Mr Pargeter came in his van asking after the ewes. I told him what it said, he read it twice through the windscreen, then drove off without his change for the eggs. I've counted the chickens three times and every one is still here, which I suppose is the joke. Nobody has gone to market at all.
This morning I walked down to see whether the post had rotted, and found a second line pencilled underneath, small and careful: back Thursday, mind the gate. It isn't Dad's hand and it isn't mine. I've left it where it is, because it seems rude to rub out someone else's instructions.
Come home at the weekend and tell me who has been wandering off. Bring the good kettle. Love, Pen
