Overskåg word tattoo on top of a foot
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot is photographed from above on a tiled floor, with a sneaker visible at the top right. The word OVERSKÅG is drawn in thin black outline capitals inside an elongated rounded capsule shape, running vertically across the top of the foot. The ink is a single dark tone with plain linework and no shading, and the surrounding skin shows a slight redness.

Nobody at the Brackley Vale reunion could agree what the word meant, which was the whole point of it. Mr Pettigrew had chalked OVERSKÅG across the top of the whiteboard in 1994, underlined it twice, and told our Year Nine geography set it was Norse for the feeling of staying at a party one hour past the bus. We believed him for most of a term. Then Sandra Okafor asked him to define it in front of the class, and he said it was a word for the thing you were, if you were lucky enough to be called it.

Thirty years on, the function room above the Co-op smelt of cheap wine and carpet glue. Gaz Holloway came in late, still in the same navy blazer he had worn to his mum's funeral, and the first thing he did was hold up a beer mat. On the back, in biro, someone had copied the word with a careful hand. He said he had found it in his dad's wallet, folded small behind a bus pass, and nobody had asked him what it meant, because we all knew.
We argued about it until the tea urn went cold. Sandra said it meant a person who never went home. Dev said it meant a debt you were proud of. I said it meant the word we used when someone said goodbye twice. Gaz just turned the mat over and over, the biro catching the light, and said his dad had always called the last drink of the night that.
When the caretaker flicked the lights on to lock up, we walked out past the old gym, where the whiteboard was still leaning against the wall. Someone had wiped most of it clean, but in the corner a faint ghost of the word remained, and Gaz stopped to trace it with one finger before he went down the stairs.
