Hester Crane painted the sign over the door of the Lantern Hall the year the river froze, and the words she chose were not the ones the committee had asked for. They wanted Welcome. She painted Good vibes instead, in a looping hand she had learned from the backs of seed packets, because the saying in that valley was that a room keeps whatever you give it.

The first winter, the dancers said the letters looked like ribbon blown off a hat. Hester said nothing. She walked the boards each night with a pot of lamp black and a fine brush, touching up the joins where the damp had lifted them, until the mill lads stopped sniggering and began to dance a little slower to the tunes she hummed under her breath.

Then the miller's son came in drunk one Saturday and swung a chair at the fiddler. The music stopped. Nobody moved. Hester, up a ladder with her brush in her teeth, took it out and began to hum the reel from the top of the steps, low and steady, the way she had hummed all winter. One by one the dancers picked the tune up again, and the chair was set back on its legs without a single word.

When the hall came down, the carpenters kept the board. They say you can still read it on certain evenings when the light is low, the tails of the letters leaning towards the door as though they are waiting for someone to come in.
