Good vibes script on the ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A small black script tattoo reading good vibes sits on the side of the torso, just below the ribs and beneath the hem of a grey top. The linework is thin and even, with the lettering written in a loose, handwritten style. The skin tone is warm and the background is softly blurred and neutral, which keeps the focus on the words.

Sit down by the range and mind the cat, because I'll tell this once and the kettle won't wait. You'll have seen the lamp room above Ffaldau pit, where the sign still hangs? Two words, GOOD VIBES, in a thin looping hand nobody in the valley could have managed with a pen. Ivy Morgan wrote that. She kept the lamp checks for thirty years and wrote letters for every man who couldn't.

The manager wanted it scrubbed off the year after the roof came in on the number four level. Said it looked soft, like a Sunday school card hung above a furnace. The men said nothing, but on the Monday they all stood in the lamp queue and read it out loud before they took their brass tokens, the way chapel folk say grace. Nobody could tell you who started it. Dai Pritchard swore it was him, but Dai swore to most things over a pint.
Then the water came through in the spring of fifty-three, and we had six men on the wrong side of a fall for nine hours. The rescue crew cut through to them and found them sitting in a row with their lamps turned low, saying the words back to each other like a hymn. When the first man came out he asked for Ivy, not his wife, and when she came he pressed a pencil stub into her palm that he'd carried in his cap all that while.
The sign's still up. Ivy's gone, and so has the colliery, but when the manager's son came to take it down he found four more words scratched beneath the lintel in that same looping hand. He read them to himself, put his ladder back in the cart, and left it where it was, and so have we.
