The cat came up the stairs the night the lamp failed, which was my first sign that the sea had taken an interest in us. Nobody had fed her since old Pellow went ashore for his chest in March, yet there she was on the top step, back arched, eyes like two struck matches, as if someone had appointed her to the job.

I had the mantle off and a tin of paraffin at my knee when the moon came through the glass. It sat in the lantern like a coin in a dish. The cat walked the rail and settled on the rim of the lamp housing, tail curled over her toes, and looked out at the water as though she were counting boats. I told her she was not welcome in the lamp room. She blinked at me, which was no answer at all.
By two in the morning the wind had dropped and the fog was lifting off the Skerry in long grey rags. I wound the clockwork by hand, the way my father did, and when the beam swept out over the bay it caught a dinghy with no one in her, oars shipped, drifting towards the rocks. I would have sworn the cat stood up. Then the boat was in the light and I was down the ladder, cold to the elbows, hauling on a line that had worked loose from its cleat.
Pellow's name was burned into the transom. He had been found at dawn in the Crown, asleep under a table with his cap over his face, and he was very cross to hear his boat had gone adrift without him. I told him a cat had brought her home. He said that sounded about right and bought me a whisky I did not drink. The cat is on the lamp rail most nights now, watching the moon go down over the water as if it owes her money.
