The snow had shut the pass for nineteen days when Hanne Morrow found the mouse asleep in her bread crock. She did not shout. Bramble, the grey cat, sat on the flour sack with her tail curled round her feet, watching the crock the way a magistrate watches a man he has decided to forgive. Hanne had kept the Tallow Ford inn alone since her husband went over the ridge, and she knew a cat that wanted feeding from one that had made a bargain.

Bramble had come as a kitten the spring he died, carried in from the orchard wrapped in his coat. Every winter the mice crept in from the cold, and every winter the cat let them be. Travellers complained of nibbled cloth and small grey shapes under the settle. Hanne told them the cat was only being fair. The mice paid their rent in crumbs and took nothing more, and in return Bramble kept the foxes away from the hens.

On the nineteenth night a stranger knocked, half-frozen, with cherry boughs under one arm. He said they had been cut before the frost and would flower by morning if set in warm water. Hanne did not believe him, but the copper was already hot, so she set them in it. By dawn the boughs were open, white and pink, and the kitchen smelled of orchard in May. The mouse sat on the rim of the copper, staring up at the blossom as if it had been asked to pay for it.

Bramble curled on the hearth and purred until the thaw. When the road opened the stranger had gone, and the bundle with him, but the crumbs by the door had been swept into a neat little pile. Hanne left them there. The mouse slept against the cat's belly, and neither of them looked surprised that spring had come early to Tallow Ford.
