Grace script lettering on inner forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A thin, black script word reading grace sits across the inner forearm, with the linework tapering at the ends and slightly heavier strokes in the letter loops. The ink is solid black with soft grey shading in places, and the skin around it is pale and evenly lit. A coloured tattoo with green and orange tones is partly visible on the upper arm at the right edge of the frame.

Mags Tennant had scraped lichen from the lintel for three mornings before the word showed itself. The ruin at Hollin Scar had no roof left, only a doorway that framed the sky, and the stone above it had weathered to the colour of old bread. Under her thumb the letters rose in shallow strokes, looping and leaning as if the chisel had been held by someone in a hurry, or in tears.

"Grace," she read aloud, and the wind carried the syllable down the empty nave.

Her father, the last mason the parish would still pay, had told her the word belonged to a lady who lived here before the Scots burned the place. He told a different story every winter. Mags had stopped believing any of them and started wanting one she could carve herself.

On the fourth day she brought her own chisel and a jar of lime wash and cut a single word beneath the old one, letter by letter, matching its slope. When she finished, the two words sat one above the other like a conversation that had waited centuries for its reply. Her wrist ached. She did not mind. Brushing the dust from her palm, she bent close and saw that the old letters had never been chiselled at all, only scratched in with a nail by someone who had run out of tools, and she laughed until the rain began.
