Mr Haworth from the depot rang Mum in a state. Apparently he'd told her twice the van was not to leave the yard, and she'd said the books weren't to stay in the yard either, which was hard to argue with. She came back by lamplight with the wipers frozen and a ham from Pearson's tucked under the passenger seat. Nobody can tell you which way she'll go next. One week it's bridge at the Legion, the next it's teaching the twins to swim in the reservoir in March, which the vicar still hasn't forgiven.

What I keep thinking about is the lending cards. She'd stamped every return date in green ink, and the Pearsons' card has their names in her looping hand, underlined twice, with a note beneath: return when finished, not when due. Mr Haworth wrote on the depot form that she was unstoppable, unpredictable, and meant it as a complaint, though his pen had slowed on the second word as if he'd half admired it.
