Script quote on the inner forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo is four lines of handwritten-style lowercase script reading bind my wandering heart to thee, set diagonally across the inner forearm. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black. The photograph is taken at a slight angle against a light fabric background, with the lettering filling most of the frame.

Nell, the relief boat didn't come again on Tuesday, so I have the lamp to myself and a tin of pear drops for company. The sea has been the colour of pewter since Sunday. I keep the glass polished the way you taught me, with newspaper and a breath on it, and the beam goes round every fourteen seconds whether anyone out there is looking or not.

You asked in your last letter whether I still think of the mainland at all. I do. I think of the bakery on Church Street and the coal smoke in our front room. I think of you on the step with your shawl pulled tight, calling me a daft article for going out in the sleet to check the fog bell. I wrote a line in the log last week, which is against regulations, and I'll confess it to you: bind my wandering heart to thee. Don't laugh. It's a sailor's sort of prayer, and this rock has made me one.

The cutter's lantern showed at dusk yesterday, out past the skerry, and I climbed the gallery with my heart in my mouth. It turned north. I stood there until the light drained off the water and all I could see was my own reflection in the glass, a grey old fool with ink on his cuff.

So I'll stop here and light the lamp, and when the boat comes you'll know I kept it burning. Tell your mother I've started my letters in the morning now, not at night, so the words will be less foolish. Yours, always, from the top of the tower, T.
