Black and grey dotwork tattoo of a vintage gramophone above overlapping geometric circles on the inner forearm.

Gramophone with geometric circles on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A detailed gramophone with a flared horn and ornate wooden base sits above a set of overlapping circles drawn with fine construction-style lines. The shading is built from stippled dots and fine hatching, giving the horn and base soft tonal depth. The tattoo is in black and grey, photographed close up on the inner forearm against a blurred indoor background.

Dear Tomasz,

The rain has not let up since Thursday, and the stall at Wednesfield market is a sad little tent of wet cardboard. I'm writing this under the counter with the lamp on, because the gramophone you left me keeps drawing a crowd, and I'd rather be dry than sell it to the first man with a ten pound note and no sense.

Mrs Achterberg came by again this morning with her grandfather's horn. She wants it restored before her wedding in June, when she plans to play an old waltz on it. I told her the horn itself is sound and only the tinplate is split at the seam. I showed her how the flare is stippled, dot by dot, the way your hand used to shade the brass so the light sits in it softly. She said it was the most patient thing she had heard all year.

The circles are what I keep looking at. You drew them on the back of an invoice before you left, three overlapping rings with the centres marked by a compass point. You said the turntable, the horn and the rings were all one thing, that sound goes out in circles and comes back in circles. I thought you were talking nonsense to make the job sound grand. Now I think you were right.

Come home at Easter. The record player is on the bench, the mould is off the wall, and the rain has finally stopped. Bring the compass.

Yours, Halina
