Colour tattoo of a green awareness ribbon with the word Fighter written in black script across it, on the forearm.

Green awareness ribbon with Fighter script

Lettering · Forearm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a green awareness ribbon with a looped black script reading Fighter running over and across it. The ribbon is filled with soft green shading that fades to lighter tones in the centre, with dark outlines defining its shape. The design is centred on a plain background of skin in a close, slightly angled crop.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dilys had the brushes out before the kettle boiled, because the Hollins Road Working Men's Club wanted its banner repainted by Saturday. Her grandson Ceri had rung from the hospital corridor asking for the lime green of the old club flag, not the tired olive it had faded to. "Make it say Fighter," he said. "Make it look like it means it."

She mixed the green on a saucer, adding a drop of yellow until it matched the ribbon loops she remembered from the strike year, when the women of the terrace stitched favours for the men on the picket line. She had never liked that word on anything. Men in the village had been called fighters underground, and most of them came up coughing and quiet. But Ceri had asked, and she could make the script run loose, the way her own mother wrote letters, letting the F sweep out past the edge of the board.

At the kitchen table the ribbon was the hardest part. Its loops had to sit beneath the lettering so the black strokes crossed them without drowning them. She shaded the centre pale, the way a cap lamp catches the wall of a drift, and kept the outline dark so the shape would hold under the hall lights. Her hand shook once, at the g. She set the brush down on the rim of the saucer, waited for the tremor to pass, and picked it up again.

On Saturday the banner went up over the stage. Ceri came in on his mother's arm and stood in front of it a long time before he laughed and said the green was too bright. Dilys told him it was the colour the club had always been. He reached up and touched the bottom curl of the ribbon, where the paint was still soft. "Leave it," he said. "Nobody touch it up, Nan."
