Green ribbon heart tattoo on wrist

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A small ribbon forms a loop at the top, creating a heart shape, and crosses downwards into a straight tail. The ribbon is outlined in black with a flat lime green fill and no shading. It sits centred on the inner wrist against plain skin, with a dark background to the right.

The ribbon was already knotted to the wire when I reached the top of the Kessel Pass, its tails snapping in the wind. Ada had tied it there in March, she said, though she could not remember which of the hundred walkers that winter had given her the spool. I counted the others as I walked the fence. Faded red, a blue gone grey, three yellow, and this one, lime bright as a tennis ball, looped into a heart and crossed through by its own tail as neatly as a seam.

Ada kept the hut below the saddle and a ledger with a broken spine. I had come up with the post and a tin of peaches, and to say the road to Lanz would stay shut until the thaw. She listened with her hands round a mug, then asked whether the snow had reached the second cairn yet. I said no. She nodded as if that were the only news that counted.

On the way down I found a glove snagged on the wire beside the lime ribbon, a child's mitten of red wool with a hole at one finger. I carried it in my pocket for a mile before I understood it had been left for me to bring back up. Ada took it, turned it over, and tied its cuff to the fence with a double knot. 'Somebody will come looking,' she said. 'They always do, and the ribbons tell them where to stop.'

We walked down together in the blue dusk, the wind at our backs. I did not look round until the bend, and when I did the ribbons were still there, every colour I had counted, the lime one gone silver in the last light, its heart open to the valley as if it were waiting for someone to ask it the way home.
