Green claw-mark design on abdomen

Other · Colour · Photo

A bare midriff above a black belt with green studs, with a green claw-mark design on the abdomen and a green fingerless glove at the top edge of the frame. The design has sharp, solid shapes with a flat fill and no visible shading. The background shows large yellow-green claw-mark graphics on a dark surface, so the colours of the design and the setting are closely matched.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dask had been told the scratches down the hangar wall were the work of a rogue loader, and she believed it right up until the fourth set appeared overnight. Three long green and yellow streaks had been gouged through the grime of the bay doors, as if something had dragged a hand down the metal to see whether it would give. Nobody on Tarrow Shelf slept well after that.

The foreman, Okonedo, wanted the marks painted over before the shift changed. Dask fetched the tin of lime enamel from stores herself, the cheap stuff they used for hazard stripes, and stood a long time with the brush in her hand. The marks were too neat for an animal. Each one tapered and split at the tip as if it had been measured with a rule.

She did not paint over them. Instead she traced the nearest claw with the brush, then laid a second line beside it and a third, the way the ore crews marked a safe route through the lower tunnels. By dawn the whole bay bristled with colour, and nothing came through the doors again.

On the last night of the rotation she opened her locker and found her spare gloves on the floor, the fingertips split into three neat points, and a single green stroke drawn across the palm of the top one. She turned it over in the light for a while, then pulled it on and went out to meet the shift.
