Dolphin and waves on the lower abdomen

Other · Colour · Photo

A dolphin leaps upwards over a cluster of curling waves, with the dolphin in blue-grey tones and the surrounding water lines in soft greens and tan. The shading is soft and gradual, giving the dolphin body some volume, while the wave outlines are lighter and more open. The tattoo sits low on the abdomen at the waistband of the jeans, with a navel piercing visible above it.

Dear Bea, I am writing this on the back of the seating plan because the good notepaper is in the drawer under Mum's cake tins, and you know what happens when I go rummaging in there. Father has finally agreed to walk you down the aisle, though he says he will only do it if the boat is late, so you had better tell the vicar to keep the sermon short.

The dolphin came in on Tuesday. I was out on the Corran Star doing the last test run for the harbour party, and it fell in beside the bow, the grey one with the notch in its fin that the fishermen call Jack. It kept pace for a mile, then went up over a wave as if it had somewhere better to be, and the whole crew stopped shouting about the ropes to watch it. Ruth Pengelly said it was a sign. I said it was a dolphin and it was hungry.

I have been trying to think what to give you, and nothing in the shops looked right, so I have decided you get the sea. Not a sea you can own, obviously, but the one that brought Tom back to you every time the weather turned and he should have stayed ashore. Stand on the quay tomorrow at four and watch the water by the breakwater. If Jack turns up, don't let Father tell you it's a coincidence.

Your loving sister, Maud. P.S. Tell Tom the cake is not a dolphin. I tried, and it came out looking like a loaf.
