Green fern tattoo down the spine

Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo

A photograph from behind of a woman with her dark red hair in a loose bun, showing a single large fern frond tattooed vertically down the centre of her upper back. The fern is rendered in shaded green ink with fine, detailed leaflets along a central stem, and the soft shading gives it a slightly three-dimensional, leaf-like appearance. The plain light background and even lighting keep the focus on the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Tom, the mist came down over Garrow Gap before noon, so I sat in the cart with the press open on my knees and waited for it to lift. The carter has gone on to Hollin Farm with the mules and promised to return at dusk, which leaves me the afternoon and a notebook that is nearly full.

There is a stone wall below the road where the rain runs off the scarp, and in one crack of it grows a male fern, a single frond as long as my forearm. I have come up here four summers looking for the spores your father wrote about, and never once thought to look at the wall. Today I did, because the mist had swallowed everything else and the fern was the only green thing I could see.

I cut it with the small knife, very carefully, and left the root in the crack so it might come back. Laid between blotting paper it will take a fortnight to dry flat, and the leaflets will keep the colour of a bruise going off, which is the nearest thing to green that paper allows. I have tucked it under the Bible in the cart so the damp cannot reach it.

I am enclosing the twin of it, pressed in August from the same bank. Hold it to the window and you will see how the veins run out from the midrib like the lines on your palm, and how the last pinna curls back as if listening. Mind the envelope. Keep it flat, and come up in spring if you can bear the road.
