Pine tree tattoo on the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A single slender pine or fir tree is tattooed vertically on the side of the ribs, with a thin trunk and tiered branches drawn in solid black ink. The linework is fine and the foliage is built up with small dense strokes, giving a silhouette-like effect. The skin tone is neutral against a dark top and jeans, with a pale wooden fence behind, and the tree sits near the centre of the frame.

You were meant to be gone at four. Instead you sit on an upturned crate beside the stack of Norway spruce, wrapped in your father's oilskin, counting coins into a biscuit tin for Mrs Abernethy, who insists on exact change even when the tin is half full of buttons.

She wants the slimmest one, the one you have been saving at the back, its leader shoot still straight as a plumb line. You tell her it's too narrow for a proper stand. She says her flat is narrow too, and that she has never once been asked to fill anything wider than a letterbox. You net it, twine it tight, and hand it over. It drips on her good shoes. She laughs and says the bakery will need a bucket.

After she has gone, you prop the last tree against the grey fence at the edge of the stalls, where the slats have weathered to silver. Its tiers shake off water in small bursts whenever the wind comes round. The rain thins to a mist, the lamps in the bakery window flicker on, and you realise you have sold everything except this one, and that you are glad. You stand beside it a while longer, waiting for someone who wants something that will not be finished by New Year.
