Pine tree cluster on upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a cluster of five pine trees of varying heights, drawn as solid black silhouettes with branches suggested by short horizontal strokes. The ink is a single dark tone with no shading or colour, and the design sits in the centre left of the frame. The skin is smooth and lightly tanned, with a plain pale background.

The fiddler at Brackwater would not start until the five pines at the edge of the field had been counted aloud, so Nell Ransome, who had come up from the mill with flour still on her sleeves, stood at the back of the hall and counted with everyone else. One, the tallest, its branches hanging low like folded arms. Two and three, close as sisters. Four and five, the young ones, leaning in to listen.

The hall had been built with its back to the trees, because the old people said the pines did not like to be danced past. Nobody had ever said what happened to those who did. Nell only knew that when the fiddle began, the windows on the pine side went dark, and a sound came through the wall like branches being shaken by someone trying not to wake the house.
She danced with Owen Pell, who had walked her home twice that summer and never once asked her to stay. Halfway through the third tune he stopped, looked past her shoulder, and his face went the colour of ash. When she turned, the five pines had moved. They stood a step nearer the door now, and their shadows lay across the floorboards like rope.
Nell did what her grandmother had taught her. She took a cup of cold tea from the table, poured it across the threshold, and sang the count backwards, five to one, as the tune ran out. The pines stepped back. In the morning the dew lay grey on the field and the trees stood where they always had, and Owen came up the lane with his hat in his hands and asked her, plainly, to stay for the next dance.
