Nobody on the Ouse believed the fish could pedal, least of all Ivo Quirk, who had hauled coal for forty years and held firm views about anything with fins. Mabel had found the tricycle wedged against a lock gate, its red frame freckled with rust and its seat split like an old boot. She dragged it aboard the narrowboat Lark at dusk, and by morning it was gone from the deck.

The trail ran along the towpath: bent reeds, a snail flattened into a neat ring, and a small brass bell that rang twice at every bridge. At the third bridge Mabel caught up with it. The fish sat upright on the saddle, green scales dappled with spray from the weir, pink fins folded back like a rider's coat tails. It pedalled with the grim concentration of a bank clerk on a Monday.

"Oi," Ivo called from the bank, puffing, a bucket in each hand. The fish turned, considered them both at length, and rang its bell.

"It's making for Hull," Mabel said.

"Fish belong in water," said Ivo, though he set the buckets down and did not argue when the fish swung left onto the slope above the river. The wheels bounced. The bell rang. Then the front wheel dipped over the bank, the fish gave a small, satisfied flick of its tail, and it slid into the Ouse without a splash, the tricycle bobbing after it like a lost buoy.

A postcard came to the Lark a week later, postmarked Goole. In careful pink ink it read: Found a wheel. Keep the boat steady. Ivo pinned it above the stove, and he never once complained about the bell.
