The frost had got into the top field gate again, so Dad sent me down with the wire cutters and a bad temper. I was nine and certain the whole farm was trying to finish us off. Then I found the leaf in the ditch, half under a sheet of ice: a sycamore leaf, except it was green as a bottle and someone had drawn the veins in with a very fine hand. Through its stalk ran a curved hoop of iron, with a small hook at the foot where it would catch on a coat.

I took it home in my fist. Mum said it was a seed case from some foreign tree and put it on the kitchen windowsill, where it stayed all winter, its green going deeper each day as the lamp warmed it. Nobody came asking for it. The land had been sold off in pieces since Grandad died, and the new people never came past the lane.

In February the thaw came early and the ditch ran black. I went down with the cutters again and found the other half of the story: a leather glove, stiff and folded, with a crescent of iron stitched to its cuff. I had no idea whose it was. I hooked the leaf onto the cuff and left the glove on the gate post, where the first light would catch the green.

Dad saw it from the yard and said nothing for a long time. Then he asked me to fetch the good scissors, because the gate had come loose again and wanted mending.
