Nell Morgan kept a strip of ground behind the chapel in Lower Coedcae, where the spoil heaps came down almost to the back wall. Nothing grew on the slag. But a sailor's widow from Bristol had given her a paper twist of seed for a shilling and a promise to keep it dry, and Nell pushed it into the one corner where the coal dust lay thinnest.

The plant came up tall and ragged, its leaves cut like the fingers of a hand that had been dipped in water. Men walking up to the drift stopped at the chapel wall to look at it. Old Evan Rees said it was the only thing in the valley that did not bow when the whistle went. When the roof fell at the number three level that February, Nell spent the winter stripping stalks, soaking them in the chapel trough, and spinning the fibre into cord for the winding gear.

The cord held. It held through the next shift and the one after, and by Easter the engineer at the pit head had ordered a hundred fathoms more. Nell sold the seed twist by twist to any family who asked, and she never once asked for anything in return.

Every spring a few stalks push up through the slag behind the chapel, shaggy and green, and nobody in Lower Coedcae has ever needed to plant them. The men still stop to look. Old Evan's grandson swears they nod.
