The band had been playing the same waltz since nine, and Dot Ashworth had stopped counting Ruth's trips to the cloakroom. Each time she came back she touched the lapel of her good green coat, checking the little silver clasp was still there, as though it might have slipped off and rolled under the sprung floor.

It had come in a brown paper parcel that morning, with no card. Inside was a leaf the size of a thumbprint, enamelled green and shaded with pale strokes for the veins, and a silver knot looped around its stem like a promise nobody had the nerve to finish. Dot had read the Halifax postmark and said nothing. Ruth had gone quiet all afternoon, ironing and re-ironing the same blue blouse.

At half past ten the caretaker dimmed the lights for the last waltz. Ruth crossed the floor to the bandstand, where a fair-haired lad in a borrowed jacket stood with his cap in his hands. Dot watched him look at the brooch before he looked at her face, and something in her chest loosened. He did not ask where she had got it. He only said, 'It's the same one, then,' and held out his arm.

Dot picked up the cloakroom ticket Ruth had left on the table and tucked it into her handbag. Some things were meant to be kept, and some were only meant to be pinned on for a night and given back in the morning. She didn't know which this was. She finished her lemonade and watched the two of them turn slowly under the bulbs, the leaf catching the light each time he spun her out.
