Green leaf tattoo on upper arm
Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A small tattoo of stylised green leaves with a black outline and black stem, with black dots at the top. Shading within the green leaves is uneven and textured, and the black lines are bold and solid. A partly visible pink flower with black linework sits above it on the same arm, and a green sleeve is at the right edge of the frame.

The bean had split its shell on the windowsill of flat 1409 without anyone's permission, and Maureen Pryce was not going to be the one to tell the council. She crouched on the cracked lino with her knees complaining and turned the yoghurt pot a quarter turn so the two green leaves faced the light coming off the car park. Dark soil spilled on her slippers. She didn't mind. It was the first thing to grow on that sill since the glazing firm had come and gone with their tape measures and never come back.

Her grandson had pressed the pot into her hands in June, before he moved to Leeds, and told her to keep it alive or he'd know. She had carried it up the stairs every day since, because the lift on the east stack had been out for eleven weeks. Tomasz from the estate office had promised spring for the lift. Maureen had told him the bean would not wait for spring, and he had laughed and gone off down the corridor with his bucket rattling against his leg.
This morning she had pressed two black seeds into the soil with a teaspoon and watered them from a jug that used to hold orange squash. Now the stems leaned, slightly and stubbornly, toward the gap between the blocks. Across the walkway, in flat 1412, someone had left a lamp on all night, and a small hand kept pressing against the glass as if it were trying to reach the pot.
Maureen lifted the jug again. She poured a thin stream into the soil, careful, the way she used to do for her own mother's ferns, and watched the leaves turn a fraction further toward the other window.
