The brass lamp had been polished so often in the Sundial Bazaar that its dents had gone soft, and Osric the tinker swore it still smelt of the wrong spices. He had bought it for four coppers from a widow who said only that there was a djinn inside, and that the djinn was lazy about wishes.

When Osric rubbed the spout and the smoke came, it did not bring gold or a fine horse. It rose in a long blue curl, then folded itself into three round loops, two small ones perched above a bigger one, and hung in the stall like a sign painted by a child. 'Wish again,' the djinn said, in a voice like a kettle thinking. 'That one was a waste of my afternoon.'

Osric tried for a week. He asked for the castle gate to open, for the rain to stop, for his landlord's debts to vanish. Each time the smoke gave him a new shape, and each shape, when he looked hard, had the same three rounds hidden in it, as if it could not help itself. At last he sat on an upturned crate in the ruined chapel at the top of the hill and asked the question he had been avoiding.

'Why does it always come out like that?' The djinn drifted through a broken window and was quiet for a long while. 'Because you wished for a friend,' it said at last, 'and you were too proud to say so.' Osric laughed until the chapel echoed, and the smoke, pleased, drew its three loops a little closer together.
