Green scallop shell on the side ribs

Ribs · Colour · Photo

A single scallop shell sits on bare skin on the side of the torso, shown in the middle of the frame. The shell has a bold black outline, with its ridges picked out in layered teal and green shading and a paler highlight on the hinge area. Colour ink dominates the tattoo against a warm skin tone, and a cream top and denim shorts frame the composition.

The last of the painted scallops was still tacky when Dilys carried the tray out to the pitch, and the wind off the Medway was already snapping at the striped awning. Her father had mixed the teal himself, a little verdigris from the tin he kept for the dodgems, and he had outlined every shell in black so the punters could read the Shell Stall from the big wheel queue. Fifty pence a shell, and the bucket on the counter promised a glass-eyed mermaid to anyone who could hook three in a row.

Kit had been trying for the mermaid since Maidstone, and he had nothing to show for it but a pocket full of wet ring-toss rope. He sat on the back step of the generator van, swinging his heels and telling her the fair would never reach the coast at this rate. She told him to mind the diesel. The lorries were already loaded and the rides were folding down one by one, the chairs chained up like sleeping birds.

The old man came through the gap in the hoopla at half past nine. He had come every September for as long as Dilys could remember, always in the same grey mac, always asking for the shell with the chipped hinge. He paid with a sixpence worn smooth as a pebble, told her his mother had stitched one of these onto every coat she owned, and left it on the counter without taking it. Dilys looked down at the shell he had abandoned, its ridges still carrying a faint green bloom on the thumb she pressed to it. She slid it into her coat pocket, and when the convoy pulled out at dawn toward the sea, it was still warm against her hip.
