Realistic moon tattoo on upper chest

Realism · Chest · Mixed · Photo

A full moon is tattooed on the upper chest, close to the collarbone and shoulder. The surface shows cratered texture created with soft shading and fine detail, with the darker maria shaded in black and grey. Warm peach and pink tones dominate the lit side, while the composition is framed by a white shirt and a thin chain necklace against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Brother Anselm had the copper lamp lit before the bell for Matins, because the almanac said the moon would clear the eastern ridge at ten minutes past three, and he did not trust almanacs written by men who had never sat on a cold roof in February. He climbed the ladder with a blanket over one shoulder and the brass telescope the late bishop's nephew had left to the house, its tube wrapped in oilcloth against the damp.

He had been counting craters for thirty-one years. He had named the largest after Abbot Ruel, who had once fed the whole valley through a hungry winter, and the dark patch like a thumb pressed into wax the novices called the Widow's Thumb. When the moon finally lifted above the ridge it was the colour of the peaches on the south wall, warm and flushed on the lit side, and the shadowed half was a bruise of grey and black. The cellarer came up the ladder to swear it was ripening.

His eyes were going, and he knew it. So that night he gave the lens to Tobias, the youngest lay brother, whose hands did not shake. Anselm sat with the blanket round him and talked him through the rim, the terminator, the way the seas looked smaller than they were. "The dark is where the water used to be," he said, though nobody had ever found water there. Tobias asked whether the moon minded being looked at all these years.

"It has been looked at for longer than this house has stood," Anselm said, "and it has never once complained."

By four the moon had slid behind the western ridge and the sky had gone the grey of old linen. Tobias sat on the leads with the almanac open on his knee, drawing the craters in pencil, pressing harder where the shadows fell. Anselm watched the lamp gutter, reached out, and turned it down himself.
