Small starburst on a shoulder

Fine line · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo

A small starburst made of short radiating lines sits on the upper shoulder of a person wearing a white off-shoulder top with a pink and grey strap. The linework is thin and delicate, with pink lines and darker centre strokes. The tattoo is small and placed off centre in the frame, with soft natural light and a shallow depth of field blurring the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had buried the Hollin Gate road by four o'clock, and by six the only light for three miles was the lamp above the inn door. Mrs Aske counted her guests twice and got the same number both times: five, and one of them was the carrier's boy, who had not been seen since noon. Nell stood at the window with her breath fogging the glass and said nothing about the tin under the stairs.

The tin had come up from the cellar with the spring stock, a store of rockets and wheels left behind by a travelling showman who had owed her grandfather money. Nobody had thought them useful. Nell had read the label twice by candlelight and found one word she trusted: signal. She carried the smallest starburst out onto the step, where the wind pulled at her shawl, and her hands shook so badly the first match went out.

The second match caught. The fuse hissed, and for one breath the whole valley turned the colour of a bruise before the burst opened above the yard: a fine star of pink strands, each one trailing sparks that hung longer than seemed right. Behind her Mrs Aske said nothing, only put a hand flat against the door frame.

On the far fell, a lantern swung twice, then three times, and came down the slope towards them. The carrier's boy walked in first with frost in his eyebrows, saying the light had kept him on the track. Nell swept the spent paper into the grate and never told him she had spent the last of her grandfather's luck on a single flower of colour.
